Analyzing Teacher Learning in a Community of Practice Centered on Video Cases of Mathematics Teaching

DESCRIPTION

The goals of the interactive virtual experience are: 1) to share the evolution of an analytic method that aims to reveal how secondary mathematics teachers build knowledge while collectively analyzing and discussing video of mathematics teaching, and 2) to engage webinar participants with that analytic method to gather feedback on the approach developed through the DRK-12 projects, Building a Teacher Knowledge Base for the Implementation of High-Quality Instructional Resources through the Collaborative Investigation of Video Cases. To accomplish this, the session will be structured into three segments. First, participants will engage in a simulation of a PD cycle focused on a particular mathematical task coupled with a video segment from a real classroom. Second, participants will learn about the development of the project’s analytic method that aims to capture teacher learning in these settings through a layering of frame analysis and professional noticing. Participants will engage in their own analysis of real research data of secondary mathematics teachers discussing a video of mathematics teaching. Third, participants and presenters will discuss the results from participant analysis of research data, constructive criticism of the analytic method, and ideas for how to improve the project’s research process to better achieve their research goals. We anticipate a fruitful discussion of varying perspectives and insights, all of which can inform new research directions for the presenters and participants alike.
