Digital literacies for disciplinary learning explores intersections of digital and disciplinary literacies across learning contexts such as community makerspaces and schools and examines learning across disciplines including the arts, engineering, science, social studies, language arts, and math. Columns will address work with both youth and adults, both in school and out of school. Digital enhancements will encourage interactivity with readers and will provoke questions, comments, and connections.
|MakEval: Tools to Evaluate Maker Programs with Youth||
While researchers advance work in understanding various aspects of makerspaces and the increase of making in education, we lament the lack of robust research tools that can be used for research and evaluation of these experiences. While we have used surveys and observation protocols that exist for evaluating STEM-learning in other projects (Maltese & Harsh, 2015; Simpson, Burris & Maltese, 2017), the reality is that making is rather different from many other contexts and a suite of maker-specific tools is warranted.

In this Research Work in Progress paper, we describe the methods chosen for a project exploring best practices of inclusion in maker spaces serving diverse populations. Real-world problem solving through Making is a popular technique to engage youth in STEM education. Since it is often difficult to infuse Maker curriculum into students’ school schedules, this frequently occurs in after-school programs.
