Framework for P-12 Engineering Learning: A Defined and Cohesive Educational Foundation for P-12 Engineering

Description

Engineering touches every aspect of human life, from providing access to clean drinking water to 5G telecommunications and vaccine development. Yet few young people ever encounter the subject in school or graduate with the foundational skills and knowledge to pursue engineering studies and careers. Now more than ever, we must inspire and prepare our students to grow into the informed designers and innovators the world needs to solve the tough challenges facing us today and in the future. In short, engineering learning is essential for every child in every school, town, city, and county in the country. Many of us within the P-12 education community recognize that there is something special about engineering learning. When given the opportunity to engineer, students of a variety of ages and backgrounds are motivated and eager to tackle difficult problems. They work together. They communicate. They are critical and creative and resourceful. We’ve seen it with our own eyes, experienced it as teachers and professional development coordinators, and advocated for it at parent/teacher nights, school board meetings, and legislative briefings. We know that engineering should be taught in parallel with science and math to ensure an equitable, authentic, relevant, and exciting STEM education experience. However, there have been minimal efforts at the state and local level toward adopting engineering as a distinct component of every child’s schooling.

The Framework for P-12 Engineering Learning is a step toward changing that status quo and democratizing engineering learning across all grade levels, preschool through high school. The framework was developed with teachers, school administrators, and researchers working in concert with leaders of the Advancing Excellence in P-12 Engineering Education (AE3) research collaborative and the American Society of Engineering Education. It provides practical guidance by identifying common P-12 engineering learning goals that all students should reach to become engineering literate. The document will add structure and coherence to the P-12 engineering community by serving as a foundation for the development of any and all engineering programs in schools, informing state and national standards-setting efforts, and providing researchers with a common starting point to better investigate and understand P-12 engineering learning.

The framework is envisioned as both a practical guide and critical first step in a national movement to make engineering a part of every child’s educational experience. Whether you are a state education policy leader, district administrator, teacher, researcher, industry partner, or educational company, we invite you to join us in our mission.

A Lesson in Geospatial Inquiry

Description

Geospatial Inquiry is an educational framework that offers students an opportunity to engage with, and become curious about, geospatial data for a defined purpose. The authors define Geospatial Inquiry as: "Asking and answering a question through the analysis and communication of data that is linked to a geographic location on, above, or near Earth." (Rubino-Hare et al. 2017). Since Geospatial Inquiry is designed to evoke curiosity and engagement, students have multiple opportunities to seek information and explore ideas on how they see the world they live in. Geospatial Inquiry uses technology and data combined with inquiry-based teaching methods to enhance student learning (Claesgens et al. 2013). These data are often represented visually using maps. The six attributes of the Geospatial Inquiry process are: (1) examine data; (2) ask questions; (3) acquire additional data; (4) analyze and interpret data; (5) argue from evidence; and (6) revise arguments. Geospatial Inquiry helps students formulate and structure their interpretations of geospatial data into claims and arguments based on observation, critical thinking, and reflection. Not only are students given opportunities to express their understanding of data in interesting and creative ways, but they also become familiar with the nature of processing and visualizing data sets. To help provide an example of how to use Geospatial Inquiry, they have designed a climate change unit that teachers can use or modify to fit a more appropriate focus area. This unit incorporates two "Next Generation Science Standards" ("NGSS") under Earth's Systems and Earth and Human Activity.

On April 11, STELAR hosted part 1 of a two-part webinar series showcasing six ITEST projects work on designing inclusive STEM learning environments and opportunities for students with disabilities in both formal and informal settings.

Each learning environment has different goals and challenges, yet both formal and informal learning environments demand dedicated teachers to design curriculum for students with disabilities and autism that can help address the exclusion that these students have traditionally experienced in the workforce. Building STEM skills early on is essential to bridging these gaps by harnessing students’ skills and interests in STEM careers at a young age and offering transition supports.

Creating STEM Pathways at Detroit's Aquarium

Welcome to Detroit and the Belle Isle Aquarium, where students come to see fish, turtles, and frogs and leave with learning and excitement about what they, too, could be doing in the world of science. This project starts with teacher professional development to enhance their knowledge of biology and ecology and to help them prepare their classes to benefit the most from their field trip visit. Aquarium educators (and our education researchers) follow up with classroom visits, and teachers get the opportunity to reinforce lessons with small grants to enhance learning opportunities. Want to know more? Then after viewing our showcase video, join us on a "virtual field trip" (https://www.biaquariumstem.org/virtual-field-trip.html), created in response to COVID-19. Before COVID-19, every fifth grade student in the Detroit public school system could visit the Aquarium. Now, this trip is open to the world. Your students are welcome to join us wherever they are.

This video was presented during the 2020 STEM for All Video Showcase, where it earned the facilitator's choice award and has received more than 6000 views.

On June 30, STELAR hosted National Science Foundation Program Officers for an informative webinar on the Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) Program’s Solicitation (NSF 19-583). During this webinar NSF Program Officers Bob Russell, Alicia Santiago, and Gavin Fulmer reviewed the goals of the ITEST program, highlighted key aspects of the solicitation, and provided guidance on developing a competitive proposal.

K–8 STEM Career Competencies: Developing Foundational Skills for the Future of Work

Description

This framework identifies 10 foundational career competency areas correlated to characteristics of future work at the Human Technology Frontier and what thought leaders in the field believe successful workers in those environments need to know and be able to do. It is meant as a guide for teachers interested in helping their students develop the foundations of skills, knowledge, and abilities needed to be successful in life when they exit formal schooling. Many of the suggested competencies may already be included in the curriculum or pedagogy in K-8 classrooms. In those cases, this guide may simply help teachers connect what they are already doing to prepare their students for success in future work. It also suggests competencies and resources to help teachers make connections across disciplines.
