Fishponds were essential for food production and held special cultural significance. This project will study integration of sustainable aquaculture practices embraced by Native Hawaiians for centuries with emerging agricultural technologies (AgTech) focused on sensors, measurement, and data science literacy. Students will use smart farming technologies focused on data science to make decisions on growing limu (seaweed). The Institute for Future Intelligence (IFI) and the Pacific International Center for High Technology Research (PICHTR) will collaborate to develop an integrated STEM curriculum focused on AgTech that will connect traditional and modern practices in aquaculture. This research project will investigate: 1- can the project enhance student learning of AgTech, data science and AI concepts and practices through Integrated STEM, 2- can the project increase interest in STEM when traditional knowledge are integrated into the curriculum and 3- can the project improve equitable STEM education leading to increased interest in careers in agriculture and aquaculture. Students outcomes include: learning emerging AgTech and data science practices, learning STEM within the context of historically significant aquaculture in Hawaiian society, conducting scientific research in aquaculture and preparing students to enter the STEM workforce with knowledge of current AgTech practices.</div> </div> <div class="_none block block--layout-builder block--field-blocknodeone-pagerfield-pillar-1response"> <h2 class="block__title">Pillar 1: Innovative Use of Technologies in Learning and Teaching</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-pillar-1response field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">We will use integrated STEM to bring innovative technologies into the classroom. Integrated STEM require that the curriculum find ways to embed all STEM disciplines. We will develop an AgTech curriculum that uses smart farm approaches, combined with problem-based learning that will allow students some independence and creative input within the constraints of the curriculum. faculty at the University of Houston with mentorship from the participants’ families and STEM undergraduate mentors to provide hands-on STEM experiences to fourth and fifth-grade students of color. The project aims to increase awareness of and interest in STEM careers and broaden participation in STEM careers. Program components include hands-on activities that engage students with technology through the engineering design process that are led by undergraduate STEM mentors who also are from groups underrepresented in STEM careers; Scientist of Week, which exposes students either to a STEM pioneer from underrepresented groups or a STEM professional from an industry partner; the math problem of the day; and an end-of-year interactive STEM fair, during which students demonstrate their knowledge to larger audiences from their schools and communities. The research questions that guide this mixed-methods project include: 1) What strategies help conceptualize STEM knowledge in a manner that affirms students’ racial identity and cultural ways of knowing? 2) How do students’ STEM identity and awareness of and interest in STEM change over time? 3) How do families engage in their children’s STEM learning in out-of-school STEM communities 4) What motivates STEM undergraduate students to become mentors, and what roles do they enact and why?</div> </div> <div class="_none block block--layout-builder block--field-blocknodeone-pagerfield-pillar-1response"> <h2 class="block__title">Pillar 1: Innovative Use of Technologies in Learning and Teaching</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-pillar-1response field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Weekly, youth participate in hands-on engineering design activities that engage them with technology by building with the engineering design process as their framework. In addition to building innovative solutions to the weekly engineering design challenge, they also become ongoing users of standard tools used in STEM labs and industry (e.g., beakers, scales, lab notebooks). </span></span></strong></span></span></span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Science centers and museums play an important role in promoting science learning outside of schools, but have historically been unwelcoming spaces, particularly for Indigenous communities. Asset-based approaches that center non-dominant cultures are needed to advance more expansive and transformative models of science that promote rightful presence (a justice-centered framework that promotes a greater sense of belonging and shift in institutional power). This work is part of a UC Berkeley effort called the 'ottoy initiative, lead by Vincent Medina and Louis Trevino, co-founders of mak-'amham/Cafe Ohlone, which aims to foster understanding of and respect for Ohlone people and culture and to repair and improve the university’s relationship with the Ohlone community. The project engages Ohlone youth (ages 5-25) in iterative cycles of participatory design and prototyping to create immersive Indigenous science exhibit experiences using mixed reality technologies. By centering and uplifting Indigenous perspectives in science and technology learning experiences and highlighting connections between Indigenous cultural identities and contemporary STEM career pathways, the project aims to reframe STEM learning to increase Indigenous youth’s rightful presence in informal STEM learning spaces, with the potential to lead to a more diverse STEM workforce.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><strong><span><span>Research:</span></span></strong></span></span></span><span><span><span><span><span><span> The project employs participatory design-based research methodologies to investigate the following three research questions:</span></span></span></span></span></span><span><span><span><strong><span><span> </span></span></strong></span></span></span><span><span><span><span><span><span>1) What are the outcomes of youth participation in the design of mixed reality exhibits? a) How do youth develop a sense of belonging, science identity, and STEM career interest, and in what ways do these make visible and amplify their rightful presence in informal science education spaces? b) How do youth deepen and construct new STEM knowledge through Indigenous Science-based participatory design? 2) How can a participatory design model be developed in ways that center Indigenous Science and contribute to Indigenous rightful presence in informal science education? 3) How can informal science educators be supported to make sense of and center Indigenous Science? The research is guided by an Ohlone Research Advisory Committee (RAC), ensuring the centrality of Ohlone worldviews, relevance, and service to community through collaboration. We will analyze the following data: interviews with focal youth; design-elicited focus groups; ethnographic observations of design workshops and reflective conversations; and design products gathered from youth design teams. We will investigate the impact of the participatory design model on youths’ STEM learning, science identity, and interest in STEM careers, and advance understanding of design practices that contribute to rightful presence for Indigenous youth. The research will also generate insights into how to support informal science institutions in facilitating Indigenous-centered learning experiences, and support principled adaptation of the Indigenous Science youth participatory design model in informal science education contexts.&nbsp;</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><br> <span><span><span><strong><span><span>Year 1 Project Update:</span></span></strong><span><span><span> The program is named “tappenekšekma: Ohlone Science Diplomats.” tappenekšekma is a Chochenyo word that means both teacher and learner, which is reflective of youths’ role as designers which positions them as skilled and knowledgeable learners. The program involves Ohlone youth and adult family members, who have met for a kickoff event and three design workshops thus far in year 1. The Research Advisory Committee consisting of seven Ohlone adults and elders has met consistently over several months, and created a Guiding Principles document outlining a framework and a set of research instruments to collect data. Data collection with youth participants is now underway and will continue throughout the design workshops and exhibit prototyping. An early insight from this work is the importance of a family-based learning environment that centers Ohlone knowledge and values and highlights the continuous presence and influence of Ohlone people Nowhere is this more evident than in traditional hands-on laboratory classes where students apply theoretical concepts, carry out experiments and procedures, and analyze data in an active, guided, and often open-ended manner using their eyes, ears, and hands. Unfortunately, such hands-on learning experiences are highly resource intensive and thus are severely limited in a number of ways. Dangerous, long, complicated, or expensive experiments are often difficult to offer. Students are often not free to make mistakes, redo experiments, iteratively refine hypotheses or master techniques. Lack of scheduling flexibility in traditional labs can reduce participation by low-income and underrepresented students who often work while in school. Lab instructors, industry trainers, and research mentors have limited time with students at the bench preventing them from being able to correct the most nuanced types of mistakes that students make when learning new techniques. Virtual labs, in contrast, can be designed to be less resource-intensive and allow the immediate illustration of the molecular basis for observations made at the virtual bench. Unfortunately, virtual labs lack the authentic tactile feel of doing real science experiments with real laboratory instruments and tools. In this project, researchers will use emerging high-resolution active and passive optical motion-tracking, 3D printing, and mixed reality (MR) technologies to "virtualize" actual physical lab tools that can be held and manipulated by a user in a completely naturalistic manner while interacting with the virtual world with real-time feedback and just-in-time dynamic visualizations. This project will examine whether the additional level of tactile feedback offered by such authentic hands-on MR labs together with dynamic molecular visualizations can improve student intrinsic motivation, engagement, self-efficacy, knowledge acquisition, and long-term retention in undergraduate chemistry and biochemistry courses. The project will reach out to local secondary school science teachers and their students, offer professional development, and test the scalable deployment of hands-on MR lab hardware and software to underserved universities and secondary schools, addressing the outstanding problem of disproportionate science, technology, engineering and mathematics attrition amongst these groups of learners.<br> <br> This project will address the following learning research questions: 1) To what extent does authentic tactile sensory feedback of MR chemistry and biochemistry lab activities impact student learning, intrinsic motivation, and self-efficacy, and are the effects significantly different for students with different incoming levels of practical or theoretical experience with course content? 2) Do conceptually illustrative dynamic molecular visualizations presented to students immediately as they are performing "hands-on" MR experiments afford any advantages for student learning within the context of chemistry and biochemistry, and are such effects significantly different for students with different incoming levels of practical or theoretical experience with course content? Researchers will produce twelve user-selectable hands-on MR lab sub-modules distributed across four subject areas: introductory, general, organic, and biological chemistry. The content and assessments in each submodule will be user-selectable at either an introductory, intermediate, or advanced level, making it possible to examine the impact of each sub-module within multiple courses. Impact on student learning outcomes in ten different courses, most of which have existing traditional, take-home, or virtual lab activities while others are lecture-only courses, will be assessed. Formative assessments will include: standardized and validated items embedded within class quizzes and tests; internally controlled pre/mid/post/real-time assessments administered before, during, and after completion of the MR activities; online student surveys; and, for traditional lab courses, the time-to-completion or data quality achieved for real lab activities when the hands-on MR labs are used as a pre-lab activity. Results from the assessments will inform the contexts and student populations for which hands-on MR labs and just in-time dynamic molecular visualizations should be targeted and further developed. This project will enable internet-scale hands-on MR investigations across disciplines. The deliverables of the project will also include the hardware, software, workflows, and professional development tools required to enable the distributed and scalable creation of analogous "hands-on" MR labs in other disciplines and educational settings. enrichment program that the US National Science Foundation (NSF) managed in the 1990s. The Young Scholars Program (YSP) involved around 18,000 7th–12th grade students and 600 separate grants between 1989 and 1996. The purpose of YSP was to introduce high-achieving middle and secondary school students to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields to encourage their entry into those fields and thus increase the size and quality of the nation’s STEM workforce.
