The Drones in Alaska base curriculum has three versions, one with lexicon in Sugs'tun, one with lexicon in Lower Tanana Athabascan, and one with lexicon in Lower Koyukon Athabascan. The Teacher's manual for the Drones in Alaska base curriculum is applicable to all three student guides. The three place-based curricula introduce how drone-obtained data and imagery can be used to understand challenges faced in each of the three communities involved in the development of the resources. For Nenana, Alaska, the Luk'a and Drones unit focus on identifying salmon spawning grounds in the Nenana river. Associated lexicon is translated into Lower Tanana Athabascan (LTA). For Nulato, Alaska, the Studying Tokk'aano with Drones unit examines river erosion and related hazard mitigation. Associated lexicon is translated into Lower Koyukon Athabascan (LKA). For Valdez, Alaska, the Robe Lake unit addresses restoration of a culturally significant salmon harvesting site. Associated lexicon is translated into Sugs'tun. The base curriculum should be instructed prior to any of the place-based units. There is a Drones in Alaska student guide version that pairs to each dialect represented in the place-based units. Five videos supplement these print resources: the Drones in Alaska and Drone Safety videos are intended to pair with the Drones in Alaska base unit. Each of the place-based units have a corresponding video of the same name. tech and a place-based, community-engaged approach to examine attitudes toward STEM. Initially focused on student, teacher and community attitudes and behaviors, pandemic-related timeline and implementation adjustments provided an opportunity to also examine how we engaged with each other and with community members in three rural Alaska sites. Questions: How does a place-based STEM curriculum engage students, educators and communities to envision/apply STEM in different contexts? (a) How does training &amp; collaboration develop educator competence/confidence in developing a culturally responsive STEM praxis? (b) How do Elders &amp; communities exercise self-determination and ethos of place-based education in guiding project-based STEM curriculum development? c) How do interdisciplinary teams collaborate, communicate, and learn from one another when working on a community engagement project? Conclusion: Alaska is a rich context for place-based interventions. However, care must be taken throughout the life of a project to ensure community perspectives and concerns are identified, acknowledged and prioritized. Cultural values were identified, practices were respected, language was included. investigations of earthquake hazards and risk in order to increase their interest in, and identity with, geoscience learning. YouthQuake’s unique approach to the curriculum design process gathers a diverse team to co-design student learning experiences around investigating earthquake hazards and conducting risk assessments that are specifically related to the student’s community. The curriculum will encourage geoscientific thinking and computational reasoning. The intention of the co-design process is to draw on each individual team member’s expertise to build activities that engage students in learning and center that learning around community relevance. Together, the team will: (1) develop a series of activities that guide students in exploring local earthquake risk and community knowledge about mitigation options and preparedness; (2) engage students in authentic science and computer science-based investigations; (3) illuminate potential STEM careers by connecting students with scientists, graduate students, and other professionals related to earthquake hazards, risks and preparedness; (4)develop student understanding about natural hazards; and (5) develop students’ computational reasoning as it relates to real-world geoscience investigations.</div> </div> <div class="_none block block--layout-builder block--field-blocknodeone-pagerfield-pillar-1response"> <h2 class="block__title">Pillar 1: Innovative Use of Technologies in Learning and Teaching</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-pillar-1response field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">The Youthquake project follows the computational practices of the geoscientists who conduct earthquake risk assessment, including (1) accessing and visualizing large datasets and (2) simulating and visualizing earthquake hazards and risk based on land deformation. The purpose of YSP was to introduce high-achieving middle and secondary school students to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields to encourage their entry into those fields and thus increase the size and quality of the nation’s STEM workforce. qualitative synthesis to examine the effects of integrating innovative technologies into K-12 STEM education on students’ STEM career-related outcomes, and if and in what ways intervention characteristics and educational settings moderate these effects. To address equity issues in student career development, we specifically study how these effects are different for students who are underrepresented and underserved in STEM.</span></span></span></span><span><span><span> We’d like to <span>disseminate our findings, and our research process, methods, and methodological challenges to benefit the STEM education research teachers total) from Florida Title I middle schools to develop innovative STEM curriculum. This will be done via week-long summer PDs, scientist-teacher partnerships, periodic virtual sharing and planning meetings, and standards-based curricular instruction during the school year. Our project activities integrating fossil sharks and AI will reach at least ~2K to 4K students each year.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Our Cohort 1 teachers are motivated to teach AI concepts.
