Project PIs and and a team of graduate students at Georgia State University are concluding the design and development phase of a three-year, NSF ITEST-funded project called Acquainting Metro Atlanta Youth With STEM (AMAYS). The goal of AMAYS is to increase traditionally underserved and underrepresented middle school students’ interest in technology-focused STEM careers and to support their 21st century skill development. AMAYS students, who are Atlanta Public Schools students, will interact with each other face-to-face as part of an after-school enrichment program, and via an interactive learning management system, which the project team is developing. As the students move through the AMAYS curriculum, they will participate in a series of activities designed to help them develop not only technology skills, including mobile app development and media production, but also 21st century skills, such as problem solving, collaboration, and creativity. The curriculum culminates in a project in which teams of students, functioning as technology start-ups with mentoring support from area STEM professionals, will research and develop a technology product that addresses an issue relevant to the students and their communities. The AMAYS team will run a one-school pilot implementation of the program beginning in the 2016-17 school year before expanding to a full roll out of the AMAYS curriculum and interactive learning environment at up to ten metro Atlanta middle school sites in the 2017-18 school year.
