Mentoring in ITEST

Results from the Management Information System, which collects data from all active ITEST projects about what the projects do and whom they serve, showed that 51% of ITEST projects in the 2013-2014 school year included mentoring of youth participants as one of their project activities. During this webinar we will hear from three such ITEST projects and we’ll explore their mentoring structures, goals, challenges and successes.

This project develops a program combining in-school mentoring with out of school informal education experiences involving the use of three types of mentors; college students, STEM professionals, and volunteers from the participant group community.

124 low income immigrant middle and high school students living in Seattle Public Housing participate in a year long program focused on mentoring, tinkering, and understanding the role that woman and people of color play in STEM fields.

Students, teachers, and parents from minority and underserved schools will examine how knowledge of remote sensing, ocean, and climate science influence students interest in and preparation for careers in STEM.

Intellectual Merit: This is a collaborative scale-up project between Colorado State University (CSU) and the National Council for Science and Environment (NCSE). The goal of Connecting Youth with Science through Mentored Experiences in Nature is to provide rich STEM activities and research experiences for 600-700 high school students through the existing EnvironMentors (EM) program.

This collaborative project is conducting a research study to delineate the effective components of mentoring for underrepresented and non-underrepresented students in STEM, utilizing a robotics educational program.

A group of 60 10th grade students and 40 high school math and science teachers in Arizona, as members of scientific villages, explore integrated STEM and business-type problems with mentorship by college students, faculty, scientists, and professionals.

Three cohorts of forty 10th & 11th grade students, many from underrepresented groups attending under-served New York City public schools, participate in a two year program in Comparative Biology and Anthropology at the American Museum of Natural History.

This summer, twenty four students had an opportunity to meet Dr. Alex “Sandy” Pentland from MIT’s Media Lab, Dr. Gene Stanley from Boston University’s Center for Polymer Studies, and other researchers to learn about current applications in network science.

Educators committed to increasing the interest and achievement of females in engineering struggle to find appropriate resources. The Gender and Science Digital Library (GSDL) from Education Development Center, Inc., (EDC) is a unique on-line collection of exemplary resources aimed at encouraging girls and women to pursue science and engineering education and careers.
